Sib. 6.0: Slow Startup
Posted by Joshua Champagne - 24 Jul 12:42AM
Sibelius 6.0 is starting very slow for me. Sibelius used to start in less than 10 seconds, now it takes almost 2 minutes. It seems to be getting caught up on "Initializing Playback System" it just sits there for a while. I realize Win7 and 64bit aren't fully supported but am curious if anyone has any insight into what's going on.

I'm using:

Sibelius 6.0
Win7 RC 64bit
EMU 1212m

Thanks

It could be that Sibelius is loading a particularly large playback configuration. Try going to File > Preferences, then the Playback page, and switch on the option to load a particular playback configuration when Sibelius starts: set this to 'Sibelius Player' and then restart Sibelius. Does that improve matters?

I've used the general optimization tips (not loading built in ideas, setting a default playback device to general midi, etc)in the past which was how I got Sibelius starting in under 10 seconds. None of those general tips alleviate anything here.

Either it was the upgrade to Vista/Win7 or the installation of the Emu 1212m that caused the startup time to jump to 2 minutes. I was hoping that the issue would be alleviated with Sibelius 6, but it's not. After doing some research it seems that many people using Vista/Win7 get caught on PlogueEngine.dll, either with crashes or slow startup. This seems to be the issue as moving the .dll brings things back to speedy, albeit without VST support.

I also tried the fix for portaudio_x86.dll listed here: http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/en/a549 with no change.

Thanks

Try removing all your VSTs and then put half of them back. Does the program start up quickly? If so, take that half out again and put the other half in, and try again. When you find start-up slows down, take out another half of the current half, and so on, until you pin down what's causing the issue.

I've removed all VST's with no change. Still gets stuck on "Initializing playback system". The only VSTs I have loading are KontaktPlayer2.dll and GM_Module.dll.

Thanks

I was able to find a solution. After checking what was going on with PlogueEngine.dll with a dependency checker (depends22.exe) it wasn't detecting ( or rather getting access to ) a couple C++ runtime .dlls. Namely msvcr80.dll and msvc90.dll. I checked and those are in Windows winsxs folder, however, apparently you need administrative permission to have access to them. This explains why I started having this issue in Vista, due to UAC, and not in XP. After running Sibelius as administrator, it started up as it should (around 11 seconds). I also found, through curiosity, that if you set Sibelius to run in compatibility mode: Windows XP (Service Pack 3), it starts like it should.

Thanks, this might be something for the Q/A department, hopefully it can help others in the future.

I'll ask one of our developers to take a look at this problem. It's not generally causing problems, as far as I know, but we'll check into it.

That sounds very odd -- I've never heard of this particular problem before. You should have read access to those system dlls from your regular account. Here's a few things to try:

- Run 'sfc /scannow' from a command prompt which should check the consistency of the system dlls
- Reinstall the visual studio 2008 runtime: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en
- Try creating a new user account and run Sibelius from there. Maybe your user account has some strange quirk (the search path is wrong or you don't have permission to access things that you should).

Dear all,

I kept on getting C++ runtime error (#6031) after using Protools HD 8, rewire in Sibelius 6, and Automap HUI (Novation SL MK2 controller.) Updating Visual Studio to ver. 8 solved that particular problem, as Paul said.

Regards,
