Sib. 5.1: Guitar Pro music xml import
Posted by Tobias Escher - 11 Jan 08:35PM
When trying to import a file exported by Guitar Pro 5.3 into S 5.1, several error messages pop up. Sib then stops loading the file. This happens with all files exported from Guitar Pro. Any suggestions?
Guitar Pro says "File successfully exported". Do I have to convert the file?

There are known incompatibilities between Guitar Pro and Sibelius with respect to XML. It's anybody's guess where the faults lie. I've given up on this after reporting problems to both companies as well as Recordare many months ago.

The problems are at Guitar Pro's end (though I guess cynical folks would
tell us that we *would* say that), and we have offered them help to
improve the MusicXML exported from Guitar Pro, and made a copy of
Sibelius available to them to help with their testing.

Not intending to get into a debate about who's at fault, my cynicism is exacerbated by the fact that the XML file I export from Guitar Pro that fails to import into Sibelius does import perfectly back into Guitar Pro. That said, I do understand that the possibility exists that their "invalid export" algorithm is somehow mitigated by having implemented an equally invalid import algorithm.

The MusicXML that Guitar Pro exports is invalid. It doesn't surprise me
that it can import the files it exports, as I daresay the implementation
is shared between import and export. The MusicXML exported from Guitar
Pro often doesn't even pass the validator's checks, i.e. the files are
not even valid according to the definition of MusicXML itself.

Are they invalid MusicXML files, or also invalid XML (mismatched tags etc.)? If the former, perhaps an XSL transform could convert them into something Sib could understand.

That's bad. Perhaps you can talk to Recordare again. I suppose it is very bad for business to ignore the most-used notation application (which is, after all, Sibelius). I dare to say: Does Finale import GPs files? If yes, why not ask MakeMusic if they are willing to share theor code? I know they won't, but who knows? :)

> That's bad. Perhaps you can talk to Recordare again... why not ask MakeMusic ...

Daniel already said the problem is that Guitar Pro doesn't generate valid XML Files. Every XML file references a definition of the format of the data, but Guitar Pro files don't follow the format they referenced. This has nothing to do with MusicXML - it's a basic requirement of every XML file, whatever it is used for.

Fixing that error is Guitar Pro's problem. It's not the job of other software company to spend time working round Guitar Pro's errors.

And if Finale DOES read XML files with invalid syntax, there's also a bug in Finale that needs fixing!
