Sib. 4.0: Opus font download
Posted by Barton N Green - 18 Nov 06:44PM
I work on Sibelius on my desktop at home where I have an Epson inkjet printer (which can only accommodate pages that are 9" wide at the most). I almost always work w/the Opus font in Sibelius and I would like to be able to print my work out through my LaserJet printer at work since the print quality is much clearer and it takes only a few seconds per page (plus I can print on 11"x17" paper there). I tested this the other day by converting a 'sample' page into a PDF file and sending it as an e-mail attachment to my work address. The next day, I tried to open the file, but I got an error message explaining that the Opus font wasn't installed (stupid me...I always thought that a PDF file was printed at 'face value', if that makes any sense).

Is it possible for me to download/install that font from the Internet independently onto my work station or would I have to install it from a disk? If from a disk, could I do it from my Sibelius CD-ROM (I've already installed my CD-ROM on my desktop and my laptop so I've used up my registration allowance).

Or...would a place like Kinko's have this font installed on their computers? If so, I could print the PDF file there.

Thanks for your help.

If you install Scorch, that will install the Opus and Inkpen2 fonts:

It's possible for a PostScript font to be either embedded or not embedded in a PDF. If a font is requested (used) but not embedded, then the font has to be installed on the computer that the PDF is being viewed on/printed from, or else you'll get a default substitute font.

Of course, if this is a Sibelius PDF, I would have expected all the fonts to be embedded. But I've never researched that, so I don't know what Sibelius's behavior is. Maybe Daniel can address this.

The only virtue, IMHO, of not embedding fonts is that you get a smaller PDF file size. OTOH, you can run into display and printing problems that, to me, totally offset any benefit gained by the smaller file size.

I don;t believe that Sibelius explicitly creates PDFs on its own; that is usually done through some sort of printer driver (I believe in OSX there is native OS support for PDF's).

At least on the PDF creator I use in Windows (pdfFactory), there is an option to embed fonts. If the fonts are embedded the pdf should print on any system.

Yep. You just go to the Print dialog box, and there's a button right there: Save As PDF.

I'm used to this option in Adobe programs and others, but I can't find it anywhere in the OSX software (they've dumbed-down their help system in OSX and eliminated all other documentation, far as I can tell: the one thing I like the least about Mac). If I'm missing the option somewhere, if somebody could tell me where it is, I'd deeply appreciate it.

Anyhow, I've been creating PDFs this way for my orchestra for a year and a half now, and I've only had font-ish problems with one person, and he's on some funky PC setup, and when he took his PDFs to work and tried to print again there, it worked fine. So I'd THINK the Sibelius/OSX combination IS embedding fonts correctly and successfully.

From the OSX 10.4.3 Help:

"You can save a document in Portable Document Format (PDF). Then, it's easier to share the document with other people. For example, you can email the PDF or make it available on public file servers, such as the Public folder on your iDisk.

Open the document you want to save as a PDF file.
Choose File > Print.
Choose a command from the PDF pop-up menu.

To create a PDF file, choose Save as PDF. This creates a digital master PDF file. All graphics are at full resolution, and the file includes each font character it uses."

Well, I'll be darned. I didn't notice that last part before. Possibly because I was searching for "embed". . . .
