Sib. 3.0: Cross-staff beaming -- accidentals not responding
Posted by French guy - 13 Jul 04:06PM
Hello all --

When shifting a set of notes with certain accidentals across to the staff above/below (such as a piano score), my accidentals do not respond. For instance - within one bar, I have two chords; the first contains A#, the second A-natural. Once I shift to cross-staff, the second A becomes an A# and it will not respond to my 'natural' function on the keypad.

For now, I've resorted to adding the natural by use of the 'symbol' feature (hitting 'Z').

Any ideas on how to get around this?

Thanks!

If you're trying to hide the sharp sign and it won't go you will need to selecting the sharp and choose Edit > Hide or Show > Hide. (This is because of a buglet with accidentals on cross-staff notes.)

Try this.

1. Return all the notes to their proper staves.
2. Temporarily remove the A# altogether.
3. Put a cautionary natural sign on the A.
4. Put the A# back in.
5. Cross the notes to the other staves again.

You'll hopfully find that the A natural will now show up.

I'm gobsmacked - it works! But how does anyone ever discover such a solution? Many features of Sibelius are described as 'intuitive'; however, this one does not fit that definition particularly closely.

Come on, how did you work this one out?

I honestly can't remember how I came on it. I've known about it for a while. I'm pretty sure I've posted it here before. As far as I can remember, I just noticed that some accidentals didn't get shown, and some did. Then in wondering why I'd've realised that cautionary ones get shown and normal ones don't, and then I'd've tried to force one of the non cautionaries to be cautionary, which is what my last post is all about. And then when it worked I just remembered it as a good trick :-)

Is there any chance this web page can be changed so that the year is included with the date of messages? This is obviously an old message, but it would actually be nice to know how old it really is.

I was thinking the same as you, Bob! Obviously, we are both writing in 2008, and equally obviously v.3.0 was many moons ago -- so long ago that I cannot recall when!

The most recent year to have a July 13th in it was 2007, so that narrows it down a bit.

Mind you, I am writing this in April 2031.

Well, for my own small step, I am adding the year to my signature. I hope I remember to update it...

Just wanted to add a comment here that this original message was from July 2004. It is currently the end of October 2020. 2004 was a better year...
