Sib. 3.1.3: Success: Sibelius in Linux (vmware)!
Posted by orchestraltrpt - 30 Jun 12:57PM
Hi just for the other Linux folks out there, I am successfully using Sibelius under vmware. Vmware lets you install Windows (win98) in a virtual space inside Linux. The sound isn't great under vmware, but my midi keyboard works flawlessly with Sibelius, via the Yamaha usb-midi cable. I should note that standard midi ports do not work under vmware, but anything usb is fine. You also must have a good computer (2Ghz and 512 ram would be good.)
VMware is a commercial product, I should also note.

Take care!

Mandrake 10.0

I've been running Sibelius 2.11 successfully under Linux with Win4Lin (www.netraverse.com). No MIDI or any sound output though, but I wouldn't use them anyway.

I've postponed upgrading to Sibelius 3 until I can be sure that it runs at least as well as 2.11 under Win4Lin. Has anyone tried this?

I'd also like to ask the Sibelius developers: why not work together with Wine or CrossOver developers to make the windows version of Sibelius work with these emulators? The CrossOver folks have stated that they believe that CrossOver will run 95% of all Windows applications by the end of 2005. I hope Sibelius will be among them even before that, even if only with a reduced feature set and no support yet.

The quality at which CrossOver runs e.g. IE6 and MS Office is impressive. It's also a better alternative than Win4Lin since you don't need a win98 license.

You can check Sibelius 3's status regarding CrossOver here:

Note: I'm not affiliated to the companies mentioned, I'm just a happy customer of theirs.
