Resizing Texts & Icons
Posted by monsterjazzlicks - 28 Apr 09:38PM (edited 28 Apr 09:42PM)
Hi folks,

I am trying to use a new House Style other than Jazz Inkpen. I have actually found the default HS (selectable whilst creating a new project) to be more universally preferred.

In Jazz Inkpen (of which I have used for over 200 charts) I was readily able to create NEW symbols based upon existing ones. However, this does not seem to be the case with the below score.

(Please see attached.)

I am specifically trying to edit/resize/bold-text the notations for: scoops, falls, trills - I feel they would benefit from such adjustments. I am referring to landmarks: B-7, D-8, E-1, and U-3.

I have been on this bloody situation since Wednesday! I watched a ton of You Tube videos but they were all using v7.0, or similar (not sure if that makes any difference?). I also asked a couple of professional Sibelius friends I have and even they could not get it to work either! (they are both on Ultimate). My only thought was that maybe, somehow, the file got corrupted?

btw - The thick wavy-line in the brass at D-8 looks wonderful, thanks for your help!

Many thanks in advance for any kind assistance offered here.

Best,

I suspect you didn't so much create new Symbols as edit the existing Scoop etc. symbols to use a larger font size.

The Scoop symbol uses a character from the Text Style 'Special Symbols'. Make a copy of that style set to Bold and a larger size. You can keep the font as 'Opus Special Std' or experiment with the 'Special Std' font from another of the font families supplied with Sibelius. Finally, edit the symbol to use that style instead.

Screenshot attached of a ridiculously oversized scoop, just for demonstration!

(Shouldn't 'wah' be written over every note that requires it, like any other articulation?)

I have created a Special Symbols Large font for these articulations at 36pt rel to 7mm staff. This suits me fine (attached). Sib's shipped default is 19.5pt.

What’s the problem with notating fully? You put all the scoops in, why not all the ‘wah’s?

Well, right or wrong, that's what I learned at college! 'O' for open and '+' for closed (as per drummers' hi-hats).

I would have thought this would be beyond stating the ultra obvious; albeit Sib. 'stacks' the open/closed notations the term 'wah' reinforces the intention of the arranger.

That looks ridiculous. The closed character should be written to the left of the open character, a la "+o" instead of above it (see attached) No need for "wah". It's already obviously a wah indication. Use regular technique text to write this. It won't play, but does it matter?

You COULD notate 'wah' as '+o', closed and then open. But, for a straightforward single wah on a reasonably short note, just 'wah' is OK. You also need to specify Harmon, plunger or h.o.b. I suppose.

Ade - I can't seem to get the characters to sit side by side, only above and below - unless you have to manipulate their positions using the XY Axis within the Inspector?

Is it not a simple lower-case letter 'o'? You're not restricted to the selection offered in the R-click menu for any particular Text Style.

Regarding the "+o" articulation, I may be wrong, but in actual performance, I think one gets a natural pitch scoop, so it doesn't need to be written, or is it just the way I normally lip it in practice? I know that I can fake a plunger mute or HOB effect to a certain extent with chops only. What does the average brass player think?

Cheers LP,

I just performed a basic CTRL+T (and totally blew out the R-click menu). I have managed to somewhat emulate Adrian's notation - I have uploaded an example here contrasting the 'zero' vs. 'letter-O'. Inputting the characters this way actually results in a very robust result in that the two characters are conveniently fixed together.

I don't know which font Adrian is using here as his right-side-horizontal (of the '+') has a cool upward-bend in it's appearance? And he may have resized the 'O' because mine is disproportionate in both cases.

You need to get your scoops closer to the notes. Engraving Rules Jazz Articulations is the place to do this.

Thanks Ade - Well I currently have the very same issue in both the score and parts, actually. I'll see if I can take a look into applying your adjustments. Incidentally, I would also like to place the scoops in 'bold'. Paul

The two methods I have tried are my original one in which I attach a scoop from Notations/Symbols, and try to drag the character into place (which clearly is not working because of collisions). Accidentals are causing massive issues here. Also, the wide range of values I input into the related Engraving Rules verbatim have no effect whatsoever over the scoop characters from Symbols. Thanks.

...from the manual I learned of an alternative method in using the 'tadpoles' on Keypad-F11. Here, the 'positioning' values of Engraving Rules DO have an effect on the scoops. At the moment it's fine for 'natural' notes, but once an accidental is applied collisions begin.

Also, I'm not sure this method would suffice because, as mentioned, I am ultimately looking to resize/bold such characters?

It's easier to get falls, scoops, plops & doits from Jazz Articulations on your numpad or virtual keypad. I have configured my own shortcuts using the forward slash & back slash keys. But you might well need to tweak their positioning relative to the notehead in Engraving Rules.

These three scoops were sourced from (F11) keypad. But as you can see, their positionings still greatly suffer the dilemma of 'accidentals/natural' notation. The first two sit fine, while the final is way off skew.

...I set the Jazz Articulations 'Distances' to '1.5 - that's after a ton of experimentation! As per above, it kinda' works for the note-heads which are preceded by an accidental. To get it to work with a non-accidental note-head, surely you would need a separate 'dedicated' settings option?

If may be so bold as to ask, I have been totally stuck on this since prior to Wednesday. Could you please share the values you input because I honestly don't get it? I should have completely finished the whole piece off by now, I can't believe it! lol

... thanks a lot guys.

This is how I notate a 'fall'. Because it's a long line encompassing a wide range, it should be obvious the instruction is for the player to execute a LONG fall. I always used to state "long fall" in parenthesis, but I have since omitted this verbal notice as it is superfluous.

Anyway, do you think the 'line' is BOLD enough as it is (by default)?, or would you create a new Symbol and beef it up a bit?

Thanks.

I normally use the Fall from Keypad 5 for a short fall, the wiggly gliss line for a long one. 'Long fall' text can be useful. But I'm sure your players will understand the straight line.

I found this. I'm sure there are things to disagree with in it, but seems pretty good.

LP - Thanks for agreeing with me! ;-)

That linked page is great!, cheers. But you know, I have found that with big-band writing, the ERA can often set the rules as to which articulations you apply, and also their frequency. However, I think it was Ellington who broke the rules (again) and wrote NO articulations!

The reason, I forgot to mention, I use a 'straight' line for a 'fall' is because it's appearance is significantly different from that of the 'shake'.

Lead trombone excerpt: 'shake' followed by a 'fall'.

As you can see, the former, I think, may be overshadowing the latter in terms of it's 'boldness'?

I took a home-test kit yesterday. I might try it again tonight as it could have been a false-positive.

I was supposed to have a Covid jab last Saturday but cancelled it as I was feeling run-down - and I really glad I did miss it now!
