Sibelius Forum Community Guidelines
Posted by Venancio @ Avid - 23 Oct 09:55PM (edited 26 Oct 04:32PM)
One of our goals is to help you succeed in whatever field you're in. We'd like for you to use the tool that best fits you, and we really hope that it’s Sibelius.

That being said, we share the opinion of some of the members here that there's a place for Dorico questions to be answered, and that is the Dorico forum. We've never deleted posts which mentioned other notation programs as long as they're solving customer problems and are kept to a minimum. However, full-discussion threads on competitive software are deemed inappropriate as this forum is made available for the community to get/give help and advice about Sibelius.

We'd like to inform everyone that we will be removing the Dorico threads. This community remains a place where all Sibelius users can receive support from fellow users, the Sibelius Product Development team, and the Sibelius Customer Care and Community team.

Best regards,
Vee

Thank you, Vee, for clarifying this. I can't say I'm surprised at Avid's decision to axe the threads mentioned.

However, I hope that anyone who is interested in other scoring programs and is uncertain where to find help and to air their views realises that they can Google the forum Vee mentions and can also find relevant pages on Facebook - where there are also at least two Sibelius-related groups.

Also, the Sibelius blog (you can Google that as well) covers other programs than Sibelius; this is not, of course, connected with Avid.

I prefer free expression to censorship. Except profanity, cruelty, insults, sales of unrelated products, and so on should, of course, be banned. But I very much appreciated how in the past we could freely discuss Finale, MuseScore, or whatever. Yes, the guidelines were in place but they were rarely enforced. And we have flourished in our helpful discussion together. Respectfully, I encourage a light hand.

I agree with that.

Dorico was released last week, so there's a lot of hype around that, and huge traffic on the Dorico forum, and elsewhere (Facebook, twitter, what have you).

Dorico is not a perfect product - in a lot of ways Sibelius is superior, at least at this point.

Comparison of engraving programs, and comparing features, and pros and cons, is fair game as far as I am concerned.

[Insert Long Pause - or Fermata?]

What really ticks me off are the extremely negative and disparaging comments towards Sibelius and its development, some of them really personal. "Sibelius is at a dead end" "Avid is just milking the product" "Avid is evil" "There is no development"

It is really unfair, and bullshit. I know that Sam and Joe are working on a lot of things. No - not a cure for a cancer - but the product is far from dead.

I'm very happy for this forum to be confined to discussing Sibelius, and for discussion of Dorico to take place on Dorico-designated platforms.

As a former forum owner myself, I know that the hosts/moderator/forum owners are fully entitled to make whatever rules they wish here. If we don't like the rules, we don't have to participate.

So my positive opinion about the new ruling is itself irrelevant.

Hi folks,

I don't know how true this rumour is, but I do hear from time to time that a lot of forums are considering closing and relocating to Facebook - because of the huge amount of traffic which passes through it.

I hope Avid never consider doing this.

There's already considerable activity on FB with at least two Sibelius-related groups. Quite often people with questions are invited to post over here in the "Help Center", as it's easier to attach scores.

You're not one of those boring people who've taken a set against Facebook are you? It has its uses, if only for finding out when your friends' funerals are - a Facebook announcement is often considered sufficient these days. I think the kids have moved elsewhere, but FB is still a prime resource for the over-40s crowd.

There's a better s/n ratio here than on the Facebook Sibelius groups. And it's useful to be able to directly attach sib files to replies rather than just pictures.

Fwiw, there are some excellent Facebook groups.

Orchestration Online
PERSPECTIVE: A FORUM FOR FILM, TV AND MEDIA COMPOSERS (yes it's all high caps)
Music Engraving Tips
FILM ORCHESTRATORS
SibMus friends, ScoreExchange publishers and other serious Sibelius users

I can recommend joining any one of these.

Facebook is not just for posting pictures of your cat (though I love those) or what you're having for lunch, it can be a useful tool as well.

I got 4 orchestration gigs this year, all through Facebook. For whatever reason people can find me on Facebook, even if they lost my cell phone number or email address.

Peter,

If that is your experience then all well and good – and I hope it leads on to more positive things for you. You obviously have no reasons to fault the platform.

But I can honestly say that I have never had a single gig booked from any online profiles I created during the advent of the internet. One example: everyone kept pestering and sending me invites to join a site called ‘Link-In’ (or something like that). In the end I gave in and a mate showed me how to create a profile. Since then, I have something like one-thousand people following me (or ‘friends’ the site may call them). I don’t have a clue who any of these people are and it has never led to anything other than lots of ‘spam’ mail! Every gig I have played has been through either someone seeing me perform, or else though a recommendation.

Anyway, that’s just my own experience I am sharing. I won’t comment here again as I do not wish to detract from the initial subject-matter of this thread.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Laurence,

Why would not being a member of FaceBook make me “boring”, please?

I have to say, that is one of the most unfounded and idiotic things I have heard. People do have their own personal reasons for not joining I might add (as do my entire family – not just myself).

This is possibly (whether joking or not) the third condescending remark you have made against me in as many months. While you may be wizard on Sibelius, it’s probably best (for this forum) we don’t communicate from now on.

Good luck with your music.

Paul

Laurence's humour can seem blunt, but you shouldn't take it personally. I don't think he intended to be condescending, though the remark is a bit off-hand, perhaps - no more.

He and I butt heads occasionally, in a playful way, but he is well-intentioned, helpful and very knowledgeable about music, Sibelius and computers.

"Practising" is the American spelling, for both verb and noun.

In British English, the noun is spelled (or is it spelt?) "Practice",
but the verb is "Practise", the same as the American verb.

From several recent performances I've heard, I think we simply omit practice altogether so "c" versus "s" is irrelevant.

I purchased Note Performer a few months ago, and I can highly recommend it. I'm very pleased with its playback.
You just download it, then open Sibelius, and there it is, ready to go. Bring up a score and it will imediately play back with Note Performer. Read through the user manual because a little tweaking in the mixer may be necessary. It's also quite possible to switch back to Sibelius Sounds, etc..

If your browser has stored your login credentials each time you return you're immediately logged back in (or were never logged out). You'll probably have to have the browser "forget" your login credentials for this site. Then leaving the site and closing the browser should do the trick.
