Sib. 6.1: Kontakt 4 is crashing Sibelius 6
Posted by Timothy Ferchen - 16 Mar 08:31PM
Greetings I'm having an impossible time using Sib. 6. Sibelius 6 is refusing to start anymore, I assume because something in Kontakt is making it crash. In the beginning it worked well, but little by little it kept crashing at start-up. According to the crash report, it gets as far as the Kontakt load and then it fails. I have tried to remove the Kontakt playback sounds that are set for the piece, but it doesn't help. Is there anyway to start Sibelius without loading any instruments or sound sets? And is there any issues with Kontakt 4? Is there any difference in which of the Kontakts I should load to use as a playback device. There seems to be 4 or 5 of them, vst, au, 8, 16 etc. I'm using a MacBook Pro. Are there any known issues there that I should know about?
Thanks for the help if you have any
Tim

The best way to get Sibelius to start up without initialising Kontakt 4 is to move the 'Playback Configurations' folder from /Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6 out of the way, then restart Sibelius. This will cause Sibelius to recreate the default playback configurations and choose the default 'Sibelius Sounds' configuration.

I'm not aware of any specific problems with Kontakt 4 and Sibelius in terms of instability or crashes.

I use Kontakt 4 with Sibelius with no problems, on a PC.

There is one thing that might be improved: there are different versions of the dll file of Kontakt and not all of them load (some of them have too many outputs). It would be nice to be able to see the exact name of the plugin name in the devices window so you can see if you are loading the right version. This may be on the 'future enhancements' list, think I've mentioned this before.

Sibelius simply ignores the 8 output and 16 output versions of Kontakt 3 and below, and in future it will also ignore the 8 and 16 output versions of Kontakt 4.

Hi Daniel and all,
OK I did as you said and I managed to get Sib.6 up and running again. Now the next question is, now that I've taken the playback configuration folder out, what exactly do I do with it now? Since it is the Kontakt part that is causing troubles should I delete the data referring to Kontakt and leave the rest alone? Can I then put the folder back where it was, or don't I really need it any more? It seems to have a lot of other data in it. Don't I need these, or will Sibelius build it all again? Thanks for the help.

You should put back the folders and XML files for those playback configurations other than the one that Sibelius was trying to load when it was crashing. For that specific configuration, you should try recreating it from scratch in Sibelius.

Hi Daniel,
I managed to get everything else working. Sibelius will activate everything else except Kontakt 4. When I try to activate it everything crashes. I wrote to Native Instruments about the problem and I got this reply. Perhaps this is of interest:

we have heard of a similar issue with Sibelius 5. The problem was caused by
Sibelius, since it was sending "wrong" default settings to a plug-in at
plug-in loading time.

what was wrong with this "setting"?

It was a setting that was for a previous(!) version of Kontakt. Programmer
call this "setting" "chunk". A chunk that is originally for e.g. Kontakt 2 (or
even the Kontakt Player that comes bundled with Sibelius 5) will cause trouble
when sent to Kontakt 3 or 4. Actually the host should refuse to send this
chunk to KOntakt 3 or 4, but with Sibelius it seemed to us that this can be
sent though, and thus causing a problem.

Why is this setting sent?
In Sibelius, where the instruments are set up, the "default" setting can be
determined for each instrument. Here Sibelius lets you select a setting which
is inadequate for the respective plug-in (see above).

Maybe you have modified this setting in Sibelius, and after doing this, the
problem started. Do you remember this possibly?

Solution in this case:
revert to the previous settings in Sibelius where the instruments are set up.

I still think that the problem is with Kontakt since the stand alone works fine, but when I start Cubase the same thing is happening, it crashes. The same with Sib.5. But if you have any advice on how to get the whole thing sorted out I'm all ears. Thanks again,
Tim Ferchen
