The online reference manual won't open! Click on the question mark and nothing happens. Everything else seems to be working just fine. I have Adobe Reader 7.0. How can I fix this?

FWIW, the ? and all the other mechanisms work fine for me.

Is the system file association for PDF files set up correctly on your
computer? I.e. if you double-click a PDF file in Windows Explorer or on
your desktop, does Adobe Reader open properly?

Daniel:

The F1 key does nothing. The Reference Manual won't open. However, the Help Center, for example, does open properly.

The system file association for PDF files is not set up properly. I cannot -- after spending hours trying -- get Vista to associate the .pdf file suffix with Adobe Reader 8.1.

Laurence:

These are the steps I have taken on Vista....

1. Click on Start.

2. Click on Default Programs.

3. Click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program". This opens a screen showing Name, Description, and Current Default for all possible file extensions from a to z.

4. Scroll down to the .pdf file extension. Under Current Default it shows "Adobe Acrobat SpeedLauncher". Unless I am mistaken that is the wrong Current Default and it needs to be changed to Adobe Reader 8.1.

5. To change the Current Default click on Change Program at the top of the screen. The Open With dialog box appears. It says "choose the program you want to use to open this file -- File:.pdf". The box lists Recommended and Other programs, none of which are the .exe file for Adobe Reader 8.1 or simply Adobe Reader 8.1.

6. To get to that file click on Browse, go to Program Files/Adobe/Reader 8.0/Reader/AcroRd32.exe.

7. Click on AcroRd32.exe to enter it into the file name box. Then click on Open. This brings you back to the Open With dialog box with its list of Recommended and Other programs. AcroRd32.exe (or Adobe Reader 8.1) should now be included on one of the lists. It is not.

In a nutshell, What must I do on Vista to get the .pdf file extension associated with Adobe Reader 8.1. Thx for your help. Mike Cronin

In XP, I'd have gone to the associations list, removed the pdf item
and re-established an association using "open with". But for some
reason, Vista doesn't provide a method of REMOVing a file association.

Try downloading Creative Element Power tools. The evaluation period
lasts plenty long enough to fix your problem.

Solved the problem by dumping Adobe and installing Foxit. Foxit set up the Vista file asscociation properly. Mike Cronin
